Drafting Services

Philadelphia Regional Port Authority

Packer Avenue Marine Terminal (PAMT) – Crane Rail Extension

Location: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania • Delaware River

S. T. Hudson Engineers performed field surveys, and developed the structural design, drawings, specifications and cost estimates for approximately 600 L.F. of heavy-lift crane rail foundation. The massive reinforced concrete, pile-supported structures were engineered using state-of-the-art computer-aided design analysis and drafting software.

The work included crane and freight car rails, new water piping, and underground conduit and feeder systems for 480 volt crane parking receptacles and other electrical services.

A dust free conveyor system—also designed by Hudson—to transport fertilizer from a ship unloader to storage domes, is visible in the background.

South Jersey Port Corporation (An agency of the State of New Jersey)

Design of a New Slag Unloading Pier

Location: Camden, New Jersey

S. T. Hudson Engineers prepared the federal and state permit applications, developed the construction drawings and specifications, and construction management for the installation of a new slag unloading pier. The new pier is located at the SJPC Broadway Terminal. The pier supported a multi-purpose crane and conveyor system, which discharges the slag into the St. Lawrence Cement Facility. The project also included the removal of approximately 100,000 cubic yards of dredge material.

Philadelphia Regional Port Authority: Penn Warehousing & Distribution Inc.

Rehabilitation of Pier 80 South - North, South and Outshore Aprons

Location: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Pier 80 South had a localized failure on the outshore section of the pier. S. T. Hudson Engineers responded immediately to assess the damage to the section of failed pier. Hudson Engineers performed a side-scan sonar survey, a scanning sonar survey, and a professional hard-hat divers' inspection. After careful review of all field data, we completed conceptual designs, acquired state and federal permits, and prepared the construction documents. Hudson recommended demolition of the low deck structure, installation of steel pipe piles, and construction of a concrete high deck structure. On the north apron, work included removing the earth from the low deck structure, installation of concrete-filled pipe piles, installation of a reinforced concrete mat, backfilling the earth fill and installing a concrete deck. Our team of engineers/divers conducted construction inspections throughout the rehabilitation of the pier.

The rehabilitation of Pier 80 South's, South apron consisted of the replacement of front row timber piles with steel pipe piles, reinforcing a 300 l.f. section of low deck structure with new steel piles, reinforced concrete mat, backfilling the area and installing a reinforced concrete deck. S. T. Hudson Engineers scope of services included a divers' survey of the structure, report of findings with cost estimates for repair, design drawings with specifications, cost estimates, bid documents and construction inspection.

Exelon Power Corporation: Delaware Station

Rehabilitation of the Delaware Station Pier

Location: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

The rehabilitation of the Delaware Station consisted of the installation of steel auxilary piles to replace the deficient front row piles and reinforced concrete encasements of the interior steel piles. The scope of services included underwater inspection of the pier, report with findings, recommendations, and cost estimates, federal and state permit applications, preparation of construction drawings and specifications, installation of steel auxilary piles, concrete pile encasements, and a new fender system; construction management and preparation of "as built" drawings.

Conoco Phillips

Rehabilitation of the Ship Dock

Location: Trainer, Pennsylvania

S. T. Hudson Engineers performed underwater inspection of the ship dock and found the ship dock required extensive repairs. A feasibility study was prepared to determine the most economical means of rehabilitating the dock while keeping the crude oil dock in service. The scope of service included federal and state permit applications, construction documents for a new approachway, mooring and breasting dolphins, walkways, loading platform and demolition of existing structures. Hudson is ensuring that the installation of temporary walkways and product piping supports, construction of a new steel pipe pile-supported concrete approachway, and partial demolition of the existing timber low deck structure was in accordance with specifications. Construction is ongoing—four (4) new steel pile-supported reinforced concrete mooring dolphins have been completed in August 2007. The complete rehabilitation of the ship dock is anticipated to be the end of 2008.

Harrah's Chester

Construction of a Trotter Racetrack over the Delaware River

Location: Chester, Pennsylvania

Harrah's Chester Casino and Racetrack proposed to build a trotter racetrack on their Chester, PA facility. since the land was too small to fit the racetrack on the parcel of land, the track was proposed to go out over the Delaware River. S. T. Hudson Engineers' scope of services included a geotechnical investigation, federal and state permit applications, preparation of construction documents, construction inspection and "as-built" drawings. Hudson provided construction management for the demolition of existing structures, drilling of steel piles into the mica-schist, installation of the concrete deck, concrete retaining walls and steel sheet pile bulkhead.

The project required extensive pile-supported falsework since the project site had no soil overburden about the rock.

Exelon Power Corporation: Eddystone Generating Station

Repair of the Unit No. 1 Intake Well

Location: Eddystone, Pennsylvania

The Unit #1 intake well sustained damage during January 2004. S. T. Hudson Engineers' divers/engineers assessed the damaged steel sheet piling and underwater steel structural members. Hudson designed repairs using new steel sheet piling and steel structural supports, specified the removal and cleaning of the wedge wire screens, and designed repairs to the associated mechanical piping. S. T. Hudson Engineers performed construction management until completion of the project.
