Engineer / Diver Surveys

Turner Construction Company

Rehabilitation of the South Brooklyn Marine Terminal (SBMT)

Location: Brooklyn, New York

S. T. Hudson Engineers performed engineers/divers surveys on various pier and bulkhead structures along the Brooklyn waterfront. A hydrographic survey was conducted at these waterfront structures using a differential global positioning system. S. T. Hudson Engineers prepared detailed reports with recommendations and engineer's order of cost magnitude for our client's review. Based on these surveys, the 29th and 39th Street piers and the inshore bulkhead, between the 35th and 39th Street piers, were rehabilitated for future use. Our scope of work included: obtaining the necessary permits, designing repairs, and construction management. The 33rd and 35th Street piers were scheduled for demolition. S. T. Hudson Engineers obtained separate permits for the removal of portions of these waterfront structures, which included the removal of a large warehouse. We conducted a side scan sonar survey to determine if any debris from the demolition process was an obstruction in the navigational channel.

Peco Energy Company (an Exelon Company)

Rehabilitation of Norristown Dam

Location: Norristown, Pennsylvania • Schuylkill River

The dam was built circa 1840 as a stone-filled timber crib structure, approximately 1,000 ft. long, across the Schuylkill River at Norristown. Originally, designed to provide a process water supply, it now functions to preserve recreational boating upstream.

The rehabilitation, designed by S. T. Hudson Engineers, included driving steel sheet piling to bedrock up and down stream of the timber cribbing, interconnected with tie-rods as shown above. The toes of the downriver sheet piles are secured by steel pins grouted into bedrock. The temporary timber spillways shown were subsequently replaced with reinforced concrete structures.

Hudson's role in this $4 million project began with diver/engineer surveys and design of repairs, and continued through construction management.

Condition Survey and Replacement of Collapsing Bulkhead

Location: Riverbend Apartments • Jacksonville, Florida

Riverbend Apartments, BeforeS. T. Hudson Engineers conducted a condition survey of an existing timber bulkhead, along the St. John’s River, which was over 800 linear feet.

Hudson Engineers designed this modern replacement for the collapsing timber bulkhead. Concrete sheet piling was chosen for long life and resistance to marine borer attack. A cantilevered design avoided excavation near the existing building foundations for a tieback system that would otherwise be required. A precast cap was doweled in place.

Riverbend Apartments, After

Hudson secured the necessary environmental permits from the respective agencies to complete this project on schedule.

Delaware River and Bay Authority

Annual Condition Survey of the Three Forts Crossing Ferry Docks

Location: Pennsville, NJ; Pea Patch Island, DE and Delaware City, DE • Delaware River

S. T. Hudson Engineers conducts annual condition surveys for the Authority at these three (3), Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliant, passenger ferry docks. Our engineers perform topside inspections of all structural components at each location. Our team of professional, hard-hat divers inspect the structural members located at and below the tidal zone to the existing river bottom. If conditions deem necessary, we conduct non destructive, ultrasonic thickness tests to obtain percentages of steel loss, timber pile sampling and structural analysis based on our findings.

These ferries provide access to these Civil War era armaments for both the public and park staff who maintain these historic gems.

Philadelphia Regional Port Authority: Penn Warehousing & Distribution Inc.

Rehabilitation of Pier 80 South - North, South and Outshore Aprons

Location: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Pier 80 South had a localized failure on the outshore section of the pier. S. T. Hudson Engineers responded immediately to assess the damage to the section of failed pier. Hudson Engineers performed a side-scan sonar survey, a scanning sonar survey, and a professional hard-hat divers' inspection. After careful review of all field data, we completed conceptual designs, acquired state and federal permits, and prepared the construction documents. Hudson recommended demolition of the low deck structure, installation of steel pipe piles, and construction of a concrete high deck structure. On the north apron, work included removing the earth from the low deck structure, installation of concrete-filled pipe piles, installation of a reinforced concrete mat, backfilling the earth fill and installing a concrete deck. Our team of engineers/divers conducted construction inspections throughout the rehabilitation of the pier.

The rehabilitation of Pier 80 South's, South apron consisted of the replacement of front row timber piles with steel pipe piles, reinforcing a 300 l.f. section of low deck structure with new steel piles, reinforced concrete mat, backfilling the area and installing a reinforced concrete deck. S. T. Hudson Engineers scope of services included a divers' survey of the structure, report of findings with cost estimates for repair, design drawings with specifications, cost estimates, bid documents and construction inspection.
