In the past, underwater inspections were completed through various survey methods, including hydrographic, side-scan sonar, and professional, hard-hat divers’ inspections. Through advancements in technology, S. T. Hudson Engineers Inc. has been able to reach a higher level and more effective way of underwater surveying and mapping, through the use of Scanning Sonar.
Scanning Sonar is able to capture real-time images of underwater conditions when visibility may be obstructed or conditions unsafe for a diver. Similar to side-scan sonar technology, Scanning Sonar uses electronic components plus a stepper motor to transmit pings and receive echoes. After each transmittal, a motor step changes the angle and repeats the process giving the topside supervisor a digital, real-time image of the set parameters.
A major benefit of Scanning Sonar is the ability to provide the owner with a baseline survey to assist in determining any change in conditions when future Scanning Sonar data is collected and compared to the baseline survey.
When Scanning Sonar is used in conjunction with a diver, the scanning sonar provides an increased level of safety to identify any potential hazards to the diver and allows the diver to be tracked and directed by the topside supervisor in real-time. The combination of a diver and Scanning Sonar provides the highest level of underwater inspection available.
